5 Steps to Fix a Bumpy Lawn

lawn maintenance

Is your lawn bumpy and you are in awe of your neighbor who has a leveled lawn with thick and lovely bushes and well-trimmed grass? If so, then there might be some reasons behind this bumpiness and until you understand the root cause, you won’t be able to fix the issue. At times pests invade the greens and at others weeds cover the entire space and are too hard on the grass. The ultimate result is the bumpy lawn which looks more like a rollercoaster ride instead of a leveled field where you can lie down comfortably and bask in the sun or sit casually and enjoy a cup of tea in the evening.

Thus, we have shortlisted 5 steps that can help you in fixing a bumpy lawn so that you have a lawn that is smooth and beautiful:

  • Begin by identifying the reason behind the bumpy lawn. There could be infinite reasons why the lawn becomes bumpy and some of the valid reasons are- thin grass, change in the season, excess earthworms, and compact /waterlogged soil. If the grass is thick, the bumps won’t be noticeable. Similarly, when the season changes, the soil begins to heat up and thaw which ultimately results in a bumpy lawn. If the soil is compacted, there will be no room for aeration and the result will be a bumpy lawn. Thus, it is important to find out the exact reason before moving ahead.

  • Irrigation doesn’t mean overflooding the lawn with water. You need to ensure that there is an even distribution of water throughout the space so that the soil loosens up and begins to show a leveled look.

  • You cannot ignore the importance of fertilizers for your lawn. One of the reasons why the lawn is bumpy is that it doesn’t receive the right amount of nutrients. Fertilizers are a booster for the lawn and breathe new life into it.

  • You need to keep the aeration of soil in mind so that the issue of soil compaction is addressed.  By drilling tiny holes into the soil’s surface you can ensure that water, soil, oxygen, and other nutrients reach the grassroots and give the lawn an even look.

  • In case the bumps still exist, then use a power rake to break the bumps and then remove the thatch from the lawn. Continue this process until the results are achieved.

7 Mistakes to Avoid for Aeration and Over Seeding

Lawn Aeration and Over Seeding

Want to have a thick and lush green lawn? You may have heard about the practices of aeration and over seeding to maintain the density of the turf. However, these measures are not as easy as they seem. It requires skills and patience to do them in the right way. Due to the lack of knowledge or experience, most people end up doing more damage to their lawns with aeration and over seeding mistakes, take a look:

  1. Poor timing: The key to success is to time the aeration process right. Lack of knowledge is a big reason people aerate their lawn when it’s too cold or too hot as a result the grassroots die.
  2. Dry aeration: The right temperature and the right conditions are also important for successful aeration. Using the tools on dry grass can be a bit challenging and more damaging.
  3. Poor irrigation: Some people aerate the lawn care and leave the rest of the work for the rain. However, proper irrigation for the next three weeks is important for the health of the lawn.
  4. Lack of knowledge to use the aeration machine: It is a very heavy machine that needs to be operated with proper care. The heavy walk-behind equipment can damage the lawn if not used properly. You need to know how high to keep the machine lifted in order to do aeration the right way.
  5. Incorrect soil plugging: To remove a soil plug that is two-three inches deep, you would require a special kind of equipment. If you are going to dig it anyway, you might damage the grass.
  6. Early mowing: Resist the urge to mow your lawn after over seeding. Let the roots grow properly in the ground. It might take around four weeks of time.
  7. Early weed control: Allow the young roots to grow properly before you apply the weed control products to your lawn. Let the grass grow healthier and thicker and wait for at least five weeks to plan the weed preparation.

Bottom line

We all want a healthy and freshly manicured lawn. But doing some basic care is not enough to have the luscious greens. Labor-intensive tasks are aeration and over seeding should be left for the experts.
